Director of Young Adult Ministries

McMannen United Methodist Church, located in a diverse community 2 miles west of Duke University’s main campus in Durham, is seeking a part-time Director of Young Adult Ministries.  McMannen is a historic congregation known for its mission involvement in the local community.  In the last several years, some 240 families with 350 children have participated in children’s ministry activities, even though the number of young families who worship with us on Sundays is often less than 5. We have ministered to the children quite effectively, and now God is calling us to reach the parents and their friends.  The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in relationship building, evangelism, and discipleship with these and other young adults, which for us is defined as approximately 18-40.  This will be an outreach-focused role, using individual contacts, creative events, recreation, small group formation, networking, and community development to build a new generation of Christ followers and connect them to the church.  At the same time, the Director will work to create, improve, and sustain ministries to nurture and challenge those who are already a part of McMannen’s church life.  Along the way, the Director will strengthen the entire church by fostering Christ-centered relationships between generations and across diverse interests and backgrounds.    Due to the characteristics of young adult schedules, many of the job responsibilities will be conducted during evenings and weekends, with occasional overnight outings.

The Director will join a team of two part-time and two full-time church staff, and as such will be expected to demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills, servant leadership, and a true spirit of collaboration with people of all ages.  The Director will work with people from diverse cultures and economic backgrounds in outreach, and help to inspire and organize partners in ministry both inside and outside the church family.  The Director will be able to build effective bridges of communication and experience, and will be skilled in ministering to the families of those who become connected to the ministries and outreach.  The Director will be expected to regularly attend and sometimes help lead McMannen’s Sunday worship service, to participate in staff meetings, to collaborate on church-wide projects, and to occasionally assist with congregational care and other staff support.

Prior church related work experience, small group development/experience and a relevant bachelor’s degree are required.

This part- time position will be filled as soon as possible.  No relocation allowance will be provided.  Compensation will be determined based upon experience. Submit resumes with references and/or requests for additional information to  Resumes will be accepted until position is filled.  Information on McMannen United Methodist Church can be found at
